Corroboree

Donna McNamara is a very skilful and ardent designer with her artwork being neat and vibrant.  This piece represents people attending a Corroboree.  The Corroboree is a ceremonial gathering of Aboriginal people with strict unwritten regulations which attendees must follow.  Outside guests are not permitted to attend these ceremonies without the elder’s permission.  At Corroborees Aboriginals interact with dreamtime ancestors through dance, music, costumes and body decorations.

The Corroboree covers various social gatherings, including education for children’s learning, death of a person, initiation ceremonies etc.  Dance, which is learnt at an early age is an integral part of Aboriginal culture which includes stories of the ancestral beings who are the creators of the universe.

Corroborees have religious connotations to relate individuals with the ancestral beings.
